What should you look for in a children’s football class?
The right football class should feel welcoming, age-appropriate and easy for your child to settle into.
When choosing a football class, or comparing kids football classes in your area, it helps to look at how the sessions are run as much as what is being taught. Look for supportive coaching, smaller group sizes, and sessions that build confidence as well as basic football skills.
A good class should feel welcoming from the moment your child arrives. There should be a clear structure, but not in a way that feels rigid or overwhelming. Children should have space to take part at their own pace, especially if it’s their first experience of something like this.
If you are choosing between classes in Essex, East London or North London, it also needs to work practically for you. If getting there each week feels rushed or difficult, it can affect how your child arrives and settles into the session.
Why confidence comes before everything else
For toddler football classes, football is often less about learning the game and more about becoming comfortable in a group, listening, joining in and enjoying being there.
If a session feels too intense or too focused on getting things right, children can become hesitant quite quickly.
When the environment feels calm and supportive, children tend to settle more easily. From there, their confidence grows naturally, and their ability with the ball tends to follow.
What makes a good football coach for young children?
The coach has a big influence on how a session feels.
A good coach will guide the group in a way that is clear and supportive, without putting children under pressure. They notice when a child needs encouragement and help them feel included, even if they are a little unsure at first.
Sessions for kids should feel organised, but also flexible enough to suit different personalities within the group.

Why smaller groups make a difference
Group size can shape the whole experience.
In smaller groups, children are more likely to feel involved. There is more interaction with the coach, more opportunities to take part, and less chance of anyone feeling overlooked.
For children who are still building confidence, this can make a noticeable difference to how comfortable they feel over time.
Is a trial football class worth it?
A free trial session is usually the simplest way to understand whether a class feels right.
It allows you to see how the session is run and how your child responds to it. Some children settle straight away, while others take a little longer, which is completely normal.
What matters most is whether they begin to feel comfortable in the space.
What age should children start football classes?
Many children can start football classes from around age 2 or 3, depending on the session At this stage, the focus is usually on movement, coordination, confidence and getting used to being part of a group, rather than formal football training. In total there are 3 different age groups to choose from: 2-3.5yrs, 3.5-5yrs and 5-7yrs.
